The 50-room Marble House, one of the first Beaux-Arts structures in the US, was built between 1888 and 1892 as the Gilded Age summer cottage for William and Alva Vanderbilt. Inspired by the Petit Trianon in Versailles, the $11 million mansion made mostly of marble became a National Historic Landmark in 2006.

Interesting tour
Coach was a great tour guide, who provided us with lots of information both on the drive down and when we were driving around RI. The experience was marred by broken seats on the bus, which meant I had to sit in the wheel arch seat which is extremely comfortable on such a long drive

Lucia, the tour guide,...
Lucia, the tour guide, provided much interesting information that enhanced the enjoyment of this trip. Downtown Newport had a number of dining options for lunch and was easy to get around thanks to the handy map.
