Hon Ba Nature Reserve (Khu Bao Ton Thien Nhien Hon Ba)

Khan Son District, Khánh Hòa

The basics

Beyond escaping the buzz and bustle of Nha Trang, travelers flock to Hon Ba for several reasons. Suoi Nguon waterfall, about 11 miles (19 kilometers) from the summit, is a great place for photos, a swim, or even camping, while Yersin’s wooden house (or outstation) serves as a museum, with original furniture from the doctor himself. For memorable accommodations, camping is pretty widely accepted, and a few heavily rustic chalets are available for overnight stays.

Things to know before you go

  • There are nominal fees to access Suoi Nguon waterfall and enter the Yersin house. Bring cash.

  • The road is winding, high-elevation, and not necessarily well-maintained. Motorbiking up here is only recommended for advanced drivers.

  • The climate in Hon Ba is much cooler than down on the beach at Nha Trang. If you want to escape the city heat, simply head into the forest.

  • If you’re driving, make sure you have a full gas tank before tackling your Hon Ba adventure.

  • The top of the road may be closed during your visit. Ask around in Nha Trang to get some local, timely knowledge.

How to get there

Hon Ba Nature Reserve is 40 miles (60 kilometers) from Nha Trang. If you’re driving, find Suoi Dau Lake. From there, turn onto the narrow road adjacent to the water, at the base of the mountain—that’s Duong Len Hon Ba. It’s the only road up the mountain and it doesn’t snake off, so you can’t miss it. That being said, expect switchbacks and always drive with caution. If you’re not an experienced motorbiker, don’t risk it.

When to get there

Thanks to its elevation, Hon Ba remains cool throughout the year. That being said, you’ll want to come in the dry season, from May through September. Should you come in the rainy season, you’ll find a road that’s wet, slippery, and potentially dangerous. The trek to the top of Hon Ba is not recommended in these conditions.

Primitive life in the forest

Dr. Alexandre Yersin put this place on the map—he established a research station here in 1915. Few upgrades have been made since then: At the summit, you’ll find a small restaurant with no electricity, and a small yet traditional menu. There are some chalets for rent, but those too don’t have electricity. If you’re into rustic and old-school Vietnam, this is the place to be.
