La Isabela

Calle Profesor Juan Bosch 77, Puerto Plata, 87000

The basics

Columbus didn't find much success on La Isabela, and the colony was abandoned in 1498. Today the remnants are part of La Isabela National Park. In addition to a few structures—walls that were likely part of Columbus’ home, the church where the first New World mass was conducted, and an observation tower—there is a small museum on site with artifacts unearthed during the excavations. The beach at Playa El Castillo is also of note.

However, because La Isabela is located further away from popular cities like Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, it doesn’t attract as many tourists as other sites.
