Pune trip ideas
Nicknamed the “Oxford of the East” for its numerous universities, the city of Pune in Maharashtra, India, offers a pleasant climate and vibrant cultural scene. You'll find plenty of things to do in Pune, from visiting historic temples to exploring the city’s nightlife scene on a pub crawl. Pune also has a few great museums, including the Pune Tribal Museum (a great place to learn about the cultural diversity of Maharashtra) and the whimsical Joshi's Museum of Miniature Railways.
If you want to avoid rain and hot temperatures, consider visiting Pune between November and February, the driest, coolest time of the year. The monsoon season usually runs from June–September and can make getting around—and spending time outdoors—a bit challenging. However, if you don’t mind a little precipitation, consider visiting at the tail end of the monsoon season, when the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festivities, which celebrate the birth of Lord Ganesha, take place.
Pune is an easy city to get around, with plenty of transportation options, including a mass rapid transit system called Pune Metro. You can use ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Ola to call licensed taxis, or you can simply hail an auto rickshaw (tuk-tuk) off the street. Auto rickshaw drivers in the city use meters, so you won’t have to haggle.
Pune locals have been flocking to Kayani Bakery on East Street since it opened back in 1955—and if you're a fan of baked goods, you'll want to, too. This local institution is best known for its Shrewsbury biscuits: crisp, buttery cookies that are perfect for dunking in hot cups of milky tea. Just be prepared for a wait—it's not uncommon to see people standing in long lines to get their hands on Kayani’s goodies.
