All about Udaipur

When to visit

The best time to visit Udaipur is between October and March when the temperatures are at their lowest. The December–February period is particularly cool, though less than ideal if you plan to go for a dip in your hotel’s pool. It’s also worth considering visiting at the end of March or early April when the annual Mewar Festival—a 3-day celebration of the arts—takes place.

Getting around

It’s easy to get around much of Udaipur’s historic center on foot, and this part of town is an ideal place to stay if you don’t want to sort out transportation. If you need to get further afield, you can arrange a taxi tour or hail an auto rickshaw (tuk-tuk) and let your driver know where you’re going. Just be prepared to bargain and make sure to agree on a fare in advance.

Traveler tips

If you want to learn about Rajasthani arts and culture, it's worth heading over to Shilpgram, a reproduction artisan village and living craft museum located 5.2 miles (8.3 kilometers) west of town. This complex features a couple of dozen huts that showcase different crafts and traditions from Rajasthan and across India. Performances are frequently staged here, the largest of which is the annual Shilpgram Festival, held every December.
