The basics

All Salta city sightseeing tours make a stop at the Cathedral of Salta, which takes pride of place on the central Plaza 9 de Julio. As well as admiring the architectural landmark, the work of Italian architects Soldati, Giorgi, and Righetti in the late 19th century, visitors can see sacred statues of the Virgin Mary and Christ of the Miracle (Cristo del Milagro), two relics closely tied with the city’s history. The church also houses the remains of local hero General Martín Miguel de Güemes and other notable figures.

Opening hours and mass times for the cathedral can vary daily, and it’s often closed if there isn’t a service going on. It’s highly recommended to check when arriving in town or ask at the tourist office to avoid disappointment. Be sure to come by at night, too, when the cathedral is beautifully illuminated.

The legend of the Fiesta del Milagro

Each September 15, Salta celebrates its largest religious festival, the Fiesta del Milagro (Miracle Festival), with a lively procession setting out from the Cathedral of Salta and marching through the city carrying the statues of the Virgin Mary and Christ of the Miracle. The festival celebrates the miracle that saved the city of Salta from an earthquake in 1692. Legend has it that the image of the Virgin Mary fell from the tower during the earthquake and landed, unbroken, by the image of Christ—thus protecting Salta from destruction.
