The canyon was created by over 30,000 years of seismic activity. To see the whole canyon in a day, book a tour. If you’re on a budget, the local bus from Salta to San Antonio de los Cobres passes right through the canyon, but you won’t be able to get out when you like to see the views up close. The truly intrepid can book a guided trek through the canyon, which typically takes three days and two nights.
The Train to the Clouds runs through the gorge between San Antonio de los Cobres and Salta.
Quebrada del Toro is a top draw for nature lovers—many species of cacti are endemic here, and the gorge is peppered with lakes and caves.
Salta’s desert location means it sees blistering heat during the day and drops cold at night, so make sure you take plenty of layers and sun protection.
Local buses between Salta and San Antonio de los Cobres run straight through the middle of Quebrada del Toro, but to see all the most interesting sites, book an organized tour. Don’t miss the ruins of the pre-Inca village of Tastil. Tours run both from Salta and nearby Cachi, known for its high-altitude wine.
Summer is truly scorching in this part of Argentina. It’s much more comfortable to visit during spring or fall when the skies are largely clear. Winter temperatures are reasonable here too. There may be snow on the surrounding mountain peaks, but in Salta and the surrounds the average daytime temperature hovers at a balmy 68°F (20°C).
The best way to explore all the nooks and crannies of Argentina’s Quebrada del Toro is by bike. Rental units in Salta hire bikes for one or multiple days. From here, it’s around 30 kilometers to the start or you can take the bus (bike places are limited). Pack plenty of water, it’s as baking as the crisp, red rocks suggest.
