San Francisco Dungeon consists of 10 different scenes from the city’s past, including a Wild West saloon, a gold mine shaft, a courtroom, Chinatown streets, and a ship manned by shanghaied sailors. Expect sensory effects, and ghoulish yet lighthearted audience participation as you move through each attraction on foot.
Timed admission tickets can be purchased in advance and mean that you avoid waiting in the ticket line on arrival. The dungeon is also included on several San Francisco attraction and sightseeing passes, and can be visited in conjunction with Madame Tussaud's wax museum, located next door, with a combo ticket.
Themed souvenir photos can be purchased at the end of your dungeon experience.
Due to frightening elements, the dungeon is not recommended for young children.
Parts of the dungeon are dark and confined, and may not be suitable for visitors with claustrophobia.
Strobe lights are use during parts of the show; these areas are labeled in advance, so visitors with photosensitive epilepsy can request to skip them.
Most of the dungeon is wheelchair accessible and safe for pregnant women, with the exception of the Shanghai Kelly show and ride.
San Francisco Dungeon is located in the Fisherman’s Wharf district of San Francisco. It’s easily reached by the F streetcar, the Powell/Hyde or Powell/Mason cable cars, and public buses 19, 30, 39, 47, and 49. There is no onsite parking, but several paid lots are nearby.
The dungeon is open Thursday through Monday, with fewer crowds on weekdays. Shows run every 30 minutes and last about an hour. The dungeon is a great way to get into the spooky spirit around Halloween.
San Francisco Dungeon fits easily into a day spent at Fisherman’s Wharf, one of San Francisco's most popular destinations. Come face-to-face with California's marine life at Pier 39, known for its wild sea lions and Aquarium of the Bay, or cruise beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and around Alcatraz Island on a San Francisco Bay cruise. Dine on clam chowder and sourdough bread at a waterfront restaurant, finishing on a sweet note with a chocolate treat at Ghirardelli Square.
