Sandakan trip ideas
Explore the sanctuary via a series of wooden boardwalks that end in two observation platforms, from which you’ll likely see hundreds of proboscis monkeys feasting on guava and cucumber— sometimes, silverleaf monkeys and hornbills also make an appearance. Wildlife tours from Sandakan or Kota Kinabalu typically stop at Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary for feeding time. Excursions also tend to visit the nearby Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre.
The sanctuary is located 24 miles (38 kilometers) from Sandakan and can be reached by car; take Jalan Labuk toward Kota Kinabalu, turn off at Mile 19, and follow the dirt road 9.3 miles (15 kilometers) to the sanctuary. To avoid navigating dirt roads, opt for a tour that includes round-trip transfers.
Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary is open daily from morning until early evening; feeding time occurs four times throughout the day, twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon. Check the sanctuary website for specific times.
A short drive from Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, you’ll find Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, arguably the most famous of Borneo’s wildlife conservation centers. The center is dedicated to rehabilitating orphaned orangutans and invites you to admire the fire-colored primates from a series of wooden observation decks and the air-conditioned nursery. In the visitor center, you can watch a film that details the poignant plight of the endangered species.
