Our Lady of the Remedies is the patron saint of Paraty, and this church dates back to 1646—although construction continued until 1873. Its central position in the historic center of Paraty, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes the church a feature on just about every sightseeing tour around town, alongside other prominent attractions like the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, House of Culture (Casa da Cultura), and the Gold Path (Caminho do Ouro).
The First Church of Our Lady of the Remedies is located between Rua Dona Geralda and Rua Tenente Francisco Antonio in Paraty’s historic city center. It’s within walking distance of many other attractions. Cars are not allowed in the city center, but you can take a taxi to the bus station and walk from there.
The church is open to casual visitors, but hours can be a bit unpredictable. Visitors tend to have better luck in the afternoon and evening, but plan to stop by more than once while in Paraty if you want to see inside.
