Things to know before you go
Plaza de Armas is one of Trujillo’s busiest and most important squares, making it a must for first-time visitors.
A number of restaurants and bars can be found on and around the square, or you watch the world go by from one of the benches in the square.
Although wandering around Plaza de Armas is generally safe, it is also a popular spot for pickpockets, so keep a close eye on your belongings.

How to get there
The Plaza de Armas is located in the center of the historical district of Trujillo. Many of the city’s colonial attractions are within one block of the plaza, and it’s easy to get around on foot. Taxis are generally cheap and easy to find, and will drop you off right by the square.

Plaza de Armas is always buzzing with activity, whether you come to people-watch on a sunny summer afternoon or swing by in the evening. The best chance to avoid the crowds is early in the morning, but make sure to stop by after dark, too—the square gets beautifully illuminated.
A walking tour of Trujillo’s Historic Center
The historic center of Trujillo is brimming with colonial buildings, museums, and old churches. After leaving the Plaza de Armas, continue your walking tour to the El Carmen and La Merced churches, admire parts of the old 17th-century city walls along Avenida España, then browse the shops and take your pick of restaurants along the Jirón Francisco Pizarro pedestrian zone.
