3 Days in Cancun for Foodies
It might surprise a lot of people that Cancun has some of the best restaurants in Mexico. Yet, it's true. Cancun is home to skilled local chefs taking inspiration from around the world, meaning you can sample traditional dishes from the Yucatan, as well as Japanese, Lebanese, and Italian delights.
In a city known for its swanky resorts, Cancun restaurants run the gamut, from high-end dining experiences to affordable taquerias and street market stalls. Here’s how I recommend you eat your way around the resort city in three days.
Cancun's heat is legendary (bring sunscreen), but winter sun-seekers will find their haven.
If you only have time for one thing, make it tamales.
Wake up early and walk on Boulevard Kukulcan to admire the beautiful blue of the Caribbean. Then, throw yourself into Mexican gastronomy with a cooking class using local market ingredients and traditional tools like a stone mortar, griddle, and clay pots. A 4-course lunch and drinks are included.
Afterwards, sunbathe on the beach. Chocolate lovers and spiritual seekers who want to learn more about the Mayan "drink of the Gods" can join a traditional cacao and temazcal (sweat lodge) ceremony with a shaman. Or, take a sunset catamaran cruise in the Maya Riviera with an open bar and snacks.
Start an action-packed day on a jungle tour. Ride an all-terrain vehicle, fly on a zipline, and dip into a crystal clear cenote before being rewarded with a taco lunch.
On your return, relax by the beach or pool before joining a guided gastronomic experience. Showcasing the flavors of Mexico from the Maya to present day, this 5-course meal includes a cocktail class and wine pairing at the Travelers Table in Playa del Carmen. Alternatively, take a small-group taco and tequila tour with stops at craft markets for souvenirs, keepsakes, or locally produced specialities.
On day three, Cancun's markets are calling. Explore the city's food stalls with a guide, where you can pick up last-minute souvenirs and sample recommended street food. Afterwards, browse the vibrant stalls of Mercado 28 for fabric, home decor, pottery, and crafts. Be prepared to haggle! La Isla Shopping Village is also worth a visit, but you may want to relax on Playa Delfines instead.
That night, enjoy views of the bay from a Spanish galleon. Enjoy a 3-course lobster or steak dinner, open bar, and live saxophone as you say goodbye to Cancun.
