3 Days in Capri for Foodies

Curated by Rebecca WinkeItalophile and travel enthusiast who’s lived in and written about Italy for more than two decades.

Capri has been the Mediterranean’s luxury playground since the time of the Roman emperors, and the summer influx of VIPs and celebrities fuels the island’s fine-dining restaurants. But Capri’s culinary scene also has a humble side, rooted in its local olive trees, vineyards, and turquoise sea.

I have dined at Capri’s buzzy Michelin-starred restaurants overlooking the water and tucked into a caprese sandwich from Da Aldo while sunbathing in a deserted cove, and both meals were memorable set against the spectacular backdrop of Capri. Whether your taste is dinners by candlelight or beach picnics, you’ll enjoy three fabulous days of eating on Capri with these tips.

Capri’s warm summer temperatures are ideal for al fresco dining—just be sure to book a table in the shade.

If you only have time for one thing, make it lunch with a view featuring ravioli capresi stuffed with Parmigiano and caciotta cheeses and flavored with fresh marjoram.

Day 1

Spend your first day exploring the island by land. While meandering through the warren of whitewashed lanes in Capri town, stop for a chilled glass of limoncello in the bustling Piazzetta square and for the island’s best gelato at Buonocore. In the quieter village of Anacapri, pop into Al Buco for a fresh slice of pizza.

As the sun begins to dip beneath the horizon, take in Capri by sea with a sunset aperitivo. Set off from Marina Grande for the towering Faraglioni sea stacks, where you’ll drop anchor to enjoy bubbly prosecco and snacks as dusk falls.

Day 2

Today, delve into the authentic side of Capri’s island cuisine with a hands-on cooking class. Learn how to make classics like ravioli capresi and torta caprese with a professional chef, then feast on your handiwork over lunch. Alternatively, meet up with a passionate home cook for a stroll through Capri’s morning market to pick up fresh ingredients before moving on to her family kitchen for a small-group lesson.

Tonight, book a table in advance for one of the island’s many gourmet restaurants. Top choices include Il Riccio on the water’s edge and Terrazza Tiberio in Capri town.

Day 3

Capri sits in the Bay of Naples, within striking distance of the mainland for a food-focused day trip. Set off by ferry or private boat to Sorrento for a food tour of the old town or countryside pizza-making lesson and limoncello tasting.

In the afternoon, head to the bustling city of Naples, pizza capital of the world and home to some of Italy’s top street food. Nibble your way through the old town, stopping to sample true pizza napolitana, sfogliatelle, and other Neapolitan specialties. From here, catch a ferry or private taxi boat back to Capri.
