3 Days in West Palm Beach for Families

Curated by Nick Dauka travel writer who lived with family in West Palm for four years.

The older I get, the more I appreciate the many ways my parents tried to show me the family-friendly side of West Palm Beach. There’s so much more to this city beyond trips to the beach, the waterparks, and traditional kid-centric activities. If you know where to look, you’ll also find that Palm Beach County also offers lots of opportunities to see an array of native wildlife as diverse as the area’s history and ecology. If you’ve arrived in West Palm with kids of any age in tow, prepare for a fun Florida-style vacation filled with local history and culture. Here’s what to do on a 3-day trip.

You’ll soak up the sun every day, but be prepared for the occasional rainstorm, too.

If you only have time for one thing, make it a kayak tour on the Loxahatchee River.

Day 1

Let’s be honest: wrangling kids for photos is no easy task, especially if you’re trying to snap your next holiday card or living room focal point. So, on your first day, get quality photos of your vacation taken care of as soon as possible with a professional photoshoot on Worth Avenue.

Spend the rest of the day touring the city on an exciting scavenger hunt or, if you’d like to get out of the sun, you can see the extensive collection at the Norton Museum of Art or wander around the Gilded Age mansion that is now home to the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum.

Day 2

Ask any West Palm local, and they’ll tell you that Jupiter has one of the best beaches for year-round fun. So today, take the drive to West Palm’s northern neighbor and get out on the water. A family-friendly fishing tour offers hours of fun.

If your arms aren’t tired from reeling in snapper and sailfish, they’ll certainly get a workout in the afternoon if you hop in a clear kayak and swap the ocean for Jupiter’s scenic waterways. You’ll likely see manatees and other marine life through your transparent aquatic transport.

Day 3

Fun fact: there’s no such thing as too much time in the water when you’re vacationing in South Florida. On your last day, head to the Loxahatchee River on a kayak tour, spotting gators, owls, and stunning cypress trees along the way.

Before drying off for your flight, submerge yourself in one last activity with a private snorkeling lesson in the Lake Worth Lagoon. Or, if you’d rather see land animals, head inland to the amazing McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary or visit Lion Country Safari, where you can drive through animal habitats and see a variety of species up close.
