The basics

You can visit the museum, near the center of Baku, independently. A point of local pride, the museum is a common stop on city tours and cultural heritage tours of the Azerbaijani capital. Not all of these tours visit the exhibitions or stay for very long. Museum-centric tours, which can also stop at the Museum of Miniature Books, the Museum of Ethnography and Archeology, and others, are more likely to linger.

The museums of Baku

Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, doesn’t boast a Museum Mile, but it does have buzzy cultural centers and first-rate art museums. After you’ve seen the National Carpet Museum, take the short walk up the Baku Promenade to the National Museum of History and the Azerbaijan State Museum of Art, which features art by Azerbaijanis. Don’t miss Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center—the building itself, a free-flowing structure reminiscent of the Sydney Opera House, is worth a visit.
