The basics

St. Martin’s Cathedral is situated on the western edge of Bratislava’s Old Town, making it a common stop on most Old Town walking tours. Visitors will see vivid stained-glass windows in this Catholic cathedral, an ornate wooden altarpiece in the Chapel of St. Anne, and a mix of architectural influences. Crypts and burial grounds under the church have been discovered and excavated, with one of the crypts open to the public.

Things to know before you go

  • Entrance to the cathedral's central nave is free, but an entrance fee is required to visit the treasury and chorus.

  • As it is the seat of the Archdiocese of Bratislava, mass is held (in Slovak) multiple times a day. A service in Latin is held on Sunday mornings.

  • The staircase down to the cathedral's crypt is steep and narrow, meaning some visitors with mobility concerns may need help navigating.

  • Like any place of worship, visitors to the cathedral are reminded to dress and act respectfully.

How to get there

With its location within the historical center of Bratislava, the easiest way to reach St. Martin’s Cathedral is to walk there when already in the Old Town. To get there by public transport, take the #4 tram or a wide variety of city buses to the Most SNP stop on the riverfront and walk the remaining distance in about 5 minutes.

When to get there

Visits inside St. Martin’s Cathedral are prohibited during mass, so checking when they’re being held is a good idea. The church is only open to tourists in the morning on Saturdays and the afternoon on Sundays and is closed over lunchtime during the week. A festival with reenactments of the coronations of Hungarian monarchs takes place each year in early September.

Where to get views of St. Martin’s Cathedral

While walking outside St. Martin’s Cathedral gives you a sense of this Bratislava landmark, it’s tough to appreciate its scale up close. Head west to the garden terraces of Bratislava Castle for a comprehensive (and free) view of the cathedral and its spire. To see the cathedral and castle in the same shot, take the elevator to the UFO Observation Deck of the Most SNP bridge.
