Toniná’s importance as a ceremonial center peaked between 600 and 900 AD. Now, the vast archeological site encompasses more than 90 excavated buildings, spread over seven hillside terraces. Most visitors arrive independently from San Cristóbal de las Casas or Ocosingo, although it’s worth visiting with a local guide to get a better understanding of the site. Don’t miss the star attraction, the towering hilltop Acropolis—the views over the Ocosingo Valley from the top are incredible.
There’s a small fee to enter the archaeological site.
There are places to store your belongings, restrooms, a small museum, and parking available on-site.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring a waterproof jacket; there are 1300 feet (400 meters) separating the museum and the site proper.
The archaeological site is not easily accessible to wheelchair users.
Toniná is situated 9 miles (14 kilometers) east of Ocosingo in Chiapas and 66 miles (107 kilometers) away from San Cristóbal de las Casas. It’s easiest to get there by private vehicle, but you can also catch a colectivo (shared minibus) from Ocosingo. Look for the vehicles which have “Toniná” on the windshield.
Toniná is typically open to the public year-round, Monday through Sunday, from the morning until the afternoon. Visit at opening for a quieter (and cooler) experience, although keep in mind that the site is rarely busy. Weekends and national holidays tend to see more visitors than weekdays, however.
Chiapas, sandwiched between Oaxaca, Veracruz, Campeche, and Guatemala, is home to numerous notable ruins, alongside Toniná. Palenque is arguably the best-known site in the state, and well-worth a visit; however, don’t miss the Chinkultic ruins either, which form part of the Lagunas de Montebello National Park.
