The square is spacious, with tall trees providing plenty of shade on sunny days and lots of benches for taking a load off. A large fountain serves as a centerpiece, and statues honoring famous Brazilians, including politician Rui Barbosa, inventor Alberto Santos-Dumont, and actress Lala Schneider, are found throughout the park. It’s a great place to people-watch or relax with a snack.
Santos Andrade Square is an excellent place for people-watching, and you may even spot actors from the nearby theater rehearsing their lines.
Most of the square is paved with flat, mosaic-style cobblestones and is accessible by stroller or wheelchair.
There are no public restrooms at the park, but cafes nearby have facilities.
Santos Andrade Square is in the city's heart, a short walk from the Passeio Publico. It's home to one of the main bus terminals in Curtiba, so many people find themselves here on their way to other city attractions. The Museu de Arte MUSA UFPR looks out over the square.
Santos Andrade Square is a year-round hang-out spot, but it gets particularly popular in the summer and on weekends when craft markets are frequent. Note that political rallies and protests often start at the square, so if you see a large group of people congregating, that may be why.
The most prominent structure overlooking the square is the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR), Brazil's oldest university. The massive main building features an imposing white tower with columns and arched windows that make it look like a government building. It's gorgeous—and photo-worthy—at night when illuminated.
