The basics

Built with an emphasis on defense, the Royal Palace has limited entry points and towering walls. After extensive damage during World War II, reconstruction began in the 1980s. The palace is now a popular landmark that attracts visitors with its museums including the Coin Cabinet, the Collection of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs, and the Turkish Chamber, among other collections and galleries. The palace also offers the chance to see how royals lived during the Renaissance. It is included in several city tours, including walking tours of Dresden’s Old Town.

World War II Damage

The Royal Palace was almost completely destroyed during the bombings in Dresden in 1945. The historic Green Vault and some basement rooms survived the fire, but the building as it is seen today was reconstructed in the 1980s and 1990s. Learn about the reconstruction during a visit.
