The basics

Where else in the world can you step inside a former prison cell and be met with the beauty of local crafts and art by some of the region’s top creatives? At Ceará Tourism Center, this is exactly the vibe—a former jailhouse turned into a pleasant, creative space where indigenous and local art is championed. Textile art is a speciality here, and local artisans are on hand to talk about their skills, especially in making Fortaleza lace.

Local art in Fortaleza

Fortaleza has a vibrant culture of local arts and design that goes beyond the Ceará Tourism Center's many art stalls. Almost next door to the center is Mariak Artes, a similar historic building with textile arts and clothing for sale. Across Station Square, you’ll find the Complexo Cultural Estação das Artes, a museum that focuses on indigenous and local culture and its connection to art.
