Spot rare plants from Macquarie Island at the Subantarctic Plant House; admire historic landmarks such as Arthur Wall and the Anniversary Arch; or dine at the on-site restaurant, where food is sourced from the Tasmanian Community Food Garden.

*The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens are a fun destination for kids, who will enjoy exploring the ponds, bridges, and winding walkways. *There is no admission fee, but donations are welcome. *There is a restaurant, gift shop, and picnic areas at the gardens; most of the paths and greenhouses are easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

How to get there

The gardens are located on Lower Domain Road in Queens Domain, about 2 miles (3 kilometers) north of downtown Hobart. There is no public transport directly to the park, but it’s an about 5-minute drive or taxi ride from downtown, and free parking is available. Active types can also walk up to the gardens—about a 20-minute walk from the center.

The botanical gardens are open daily all year round, although closing times vary throughout the year. If you can, it’s worth revisiting to experience the gardens’ changing seasons, from springtime blooms to colorful fall foliage.
