Though a popular destination for Turks, Akyaka is relatively unknown to international travelers. Its well-maintained architecture, authentic seafood restaurants, and inviting boutiques allow visitors to immerse themselves in the town’s genuine, laid-back Turkish ambiance.
Akyaka is also a haven for water sports, offering a great environment for canyoning, surfing, windsurfing, and sailing. For a more relaxing aquatic journey, consider a full-day cruise in the sea or a boat tour along the Amzak River. An abundance of rental shops, beginner classes, and organized tours make it easy to enjoy each of these activities stress-free. Surrounded by mountains, lush greenery, and an impressive trail network, Akyaka is also a magnet for hikers.
Visitors should bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat to protect themselves from the intense Mediterranean sun.
Remember to carry cash, as some shops and restaurants in Akyaka do not accept credit cards.
Akyaka attracts a lot of visitors during the summer months (June–August), so be sure to book accommodations and activities in advance.
The town is easily walkable and largely wheelchair accessible, with occasionally hilly terrain.
Akyaka is 43 miles (70 kilometers) from Dalaman International Airport (DLM), and can be reached by taxi, rental car, or one of the regular shuttle services, which run throughout the day. If you’re traveling from Marmaris, the town is 31 miles (50 kilometers) away, and can be reached by car, taxi, or dolmus (shared taxi) from the city center.
For beach bums and water-sport enthusiasts, the best time to visit Akyaka is during the summer, when the weather is hot and sunny, but visitors can also enjoy Akyaka’s natural beauty year-round, with milder temperatures during the spring and fall. If you prefer a quieter and less-crowded vacation experience, consider visiting the town in April, May, or September.
Take a break from the beach and travel back in time to the 4th century on a day trip to the ruins of Knidos. Situated on the tip of the Datca peninsula, the well-preserved archeological site is an easy drive from Akyaka, and can also be visited on a tour from Marmaris. Watch the sunset from the top of the complex for a truly memorable experience.
