Home to Trotsky, his second wife, and teenage grandson from 1939 to 1940, the now-Leon Trotsky Museum was inaugurated in 1990. Permanent museum highlights include the bullet holes in the wall—reminders of the first attempt on his life—the collection of rare cacti in the garden, and Trotsky’s perfectly preserved study which remains as it was at the time of his death.

The Leon Trotsky Museum is typically open from Tuesday to Sunday between 10am and 5pm. Admission is free for all on Sundays, although the museum will of course be busier than usual. Visit midweek for a quieter experience.
Born in Russia, Leon Trotsky was a Soviet politician, communist, and revolutionary, who played a key role in the Bolshevik Revolution. He was ultimately exiled in various countries, before being deported from Norway to Mexico in 1937. There, he befriended Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, embarked on an affair with the latter, and was finally assassinated with an ice axe by Catalan-born Ramón Mercader in 1940.
