Paraty Bay

Paraty, Rio de Janeiro

The basics

Stationed on the Bay of Ilha Grande, Paraty is the southernmost city in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Visitors can kayak or cruise through placid waters and explore the tiny islands scattered throughout the bay. Most boat excursions–whether by schooner, speed boat, or yacht–include stops for snorkeling in the clear waters (with equipment included). It’s also possible to combine a schooner cruise with a jeep tour to the area’s interior waterfalls, or get a closer look at the underwater world on a scuba diving tour with a certified PADI instructor.
