Agincourt Reefs

Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, 4805

The basics

The Agincourt Reefs are “ribbon” reefs that run parallel to the Continental Shelf and the Coral Sea Trench. This geography means they’re among the Great Barrier Reef’s most pristine ecosystems. The Agincourt Reefs are great diving spots as they include a huge wall dive at Blue Wonder, interesting channels and caves, and pinnacles where fish feed. Snorkelers can also enjoy many of these sights from the surface of the sea.

Most travelers get to the Agincourt Reefs on a day tour from Port Douglas or Cairns. These can include diving and snorkeling. Some boats have underwater observatories. Another way to experience the reefs is on a scenic flight, which will give you a different perspective of the area.

Things to know before you go

  • Non-swimmers can still enjoy ocean and reef views from your boat; many non-swimmers join these tours every day.
  • Professional photo services and underwater digital camera hire are available on some tours, if you don’t have your own waterproof camera.
  • Be sure to take reef-friendly sunscreen. You’ll need good sunscreen while on the water, but coral can be damaged by the chemicals in some sunscreens.

When to get there

The best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef is in the dry season, which runs from June to October. Temperatures are warm in this part of the country year-round, but rain during the wet season can disturb the ocean and make visiting less pleasant.
