Built in less than two years, the Estates Theatre (known locally as Stavovské divaldo) opened in 1783 and hosted a number of operas penned by Mozart during his time living and working in Prague, including The Marriage of Figaro in 1786 and the premiere of Don Giovanni in 1787. While the building’s exterior is one of Prague’s architectural highlights, the interiors truly dazzle with their ornate gilded boxes, painted ceilings, and classically inspired design.
Most walking, bike, and scooter tours of Prague include a stop to admire the Estates Theatre from outside; true classical music fans can join an itinerary that traces the most important sights in the city linked to Mozart and other famous composers and musicians, including the Estates Theatre. To view the inside of the venue, tours in a variety of languages are offered directly through the theater or you can attend one of the many opera, classical music, and ballet performances held throughout the year.
