Konopiste Castle was established in the 13th century by the Bishop of Prague, and built in a French Gothic style, which can be seen in the square walls and round turrets with tiled roofs. It changed hands many times over the centuries before being bought by Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in the late 19th century, who made several changes to the property, overseeing the creation of English-style park grounds and a rose garden. After his assassination in 1914, the chateau was given over to the Czech state.
Visitors can tour Ferdinand’s grand rooms—including his extensive collection of hunting trophies, medieval weapons, fine tapestries, priceless furniture, and other artifacts—and stroll the well-preserved gardens, including the rose garden and greenhouses. Some choose to take a private tour of the chateau to learn more about its history and connection with Franz Ferdinand.
