How to Get There

Limpiopungo Lagoon is located in Cotopaxi National Park, just over 30 miles (50 kilometers) from the center of Quito. Drive or take a taxi; there’s ample parking at the foot of Ruminahui Volcano. A hop-on/hop-off bus stops at the lagoon too.

When to Get There

The most ideal time to see the lagoon is during the dry season, from June to October. Come early in the day to have enough time to explore the park and hike around the lagoon. Additionally, clouds tend to roll in later in the afternoon. Weekends tend to be crowded and parking can be difficult.

Laguna Quilotoa

Nearby is another gorgeous crater lake, this one celebrated for its bright turquoise waters. As a main feature of the Quilotoa Traverse and Quilotoa Loop, the lake has grown popular among local and international tourists. Hike around the caldera or along the Quilotoa Loop to see the magnificent Andes mountains and the villages along the route. Kayaking is available on the lagoon.
