The basics

Crossing the Old Stone Bridge is a common Regensburg visitor experience. It provides a viewpoint from which to admire the Regensburg riverfront and a path to the cute streets of Stadtamhof. City tours and day trips visit the pedestrian bridge and tell the legend of how the devil helped build it. At the bridge's southern end stands the Bridge Tower Museum, where you can learn about the bridge’s history and see the UNESCO World Heritage Visitor Center.

How to get there

The Old Stone Bridge connects the waterfront of Regensburg’s old town with the island of Stadtamhof. Walking to the bridge from elsewhere in the old town is done easily enough, but if you’re coming from other parts of the city, take one of the many buses that stop at either the Fischmarkt or Thundorferstraße bus stops on the Old Town side.

When to get there

You can walk onto and across the Old Stone Bridge whenever you want and as much as you like. The best times to appreciate the bridge’s views are either first thing in the morning or as the sun sets, as these offer the best light for the view of Regensburg’s historical center. Street lamps along the bridge make it quite pretty at night.

Where to visit on Regensburg’s Danube riverfront

Although the Old Stone Bridge is the most famous landmark on the Danube River in Regensburg, it’s by no means the only one. Down by the next bridge lies the House of Bavarian History, a jarringly modern museum that details the broader history of Bavaria. Out on the island of Upper Wöhrd, you can walk through the Pappelallee, a path along the river that winds between tall poplar trees.
