Burgstrasse 2, Werfen, Salzburg, 5450

The basics

The 900-year-old Hohenwerfen Fortress looks like something out of a fairy tale, standing 510 ft (155 m) up on a rocky hilltop surrounded by foreboding rocks and pine forests. It’s one of two 11th century fortresses (the other is in Salzburg itself) built as defensive residences for the ruling prince-bishops of the time.

Much of the original building was destroyed in the Peasants Rebellion of 1525—what you see today mainly dates from the late 16th century when the fortress was rebuilt. Visitors can tour the Romanesque chapel, kitchens, Royal apartments, and more. For a full day of fun in the mountains, you can book a combined tour that also takes in the famous Werfen Ice Caves.
