The basics

A classic Z-plan Scottish tower house, Castle Fraser—whose oldest core dates to the 15th century and was later enlarged in the 16th century—reflects the historical transition from castles as defensive fortresses to more spacious family manors. Today celebrated for its scale (including its soaring towers and generous grand hall), Castle Fraser also contains a sizable art collection, as well as quirky architectural features like trapdoors and secret staircases. Outside, the castle sits on extensive parkland, whose highlights include a walled garden, pond, and two walking trails, Alton Brae Trail and Miss Bristow’s Trail. Local wildlife ranges from roe deer and badgers to otters and dragonflies.

Castle Fraser is a popular day trip destination for Aberdeen locals and visitors and also features on full-day sightseeing itineraries departing from Aberdeen.
