A Great Cultural Experience

We loved learning about native customs, traditions and the ways aboriginal people used resources from the forest for medicine, food and building materials. Our guide was terrific!

This was a very unique, lively, informative and fun experience. A romp through the Mongrove swamps and a hike along the ocean beach, all with a spear for catching and cooking a crab and fish lunch, was a very memorable event. Likewise, the one-on-one informal conversations with local Aboriginal peoples and their stories about their heritage were a special avenue for understanding their culture and history.

What an incredible, authentic, full day. Exceeded all of my expectations, and my expectations were high in the first place. First, we were picked up from our airbnb in Cairns. It was a beautiful drive to Daintree, and the entire time our driver Bridgette shared fascinating facts with us about everything from the native people, animals and plants to information about just about everything we passed by. Bridgette was such a kind and intelligent woman! Loved her! Our first destination was the visitors center at mossman gorge in Daintree. We had some snacks, tea and coffee than head into the rainforest where we met our next guide, Skip. Skip was equally passionate and knowledgable. He took us through a beautiful path in the rainforest which is so beautiful you feel like you're in a dream, all the while telling us even more about everything around us, and some fascinating family history. After the walk through the forest, we sat down for some native tea and biscuits while Skip blew all of my minds with a didgeridoo demonstration. I've never heard technique quite like him, he was making sounds with the didgeridoo that I've never heard in my life. It was awesome. Lastly, Bridgette took us to Cooya Beach where we met up with Brandon. Another fantastic, interesting, intelligent man who gave us a short spear tutorial, and than took us through the mangroves to find some food. The group of us speared crab, and fish, found mussels and even gathered snails to be cooked later at Brandon's house. This part of the trip was more physically demanding than I expected, as we eventually found ourselves in somewhat thick areas of the mangrove trees, where you have mud up to your ankles and you have to step over tree roots with a height of anywhere from 3 inches to 3 feet above ground. Everyone did great, even the old folks in the group kept up, but I'd be lying if I didn't hear some grumbles not everyone enjoys mud up to their ankles. We than left the trees to walk in the shallow waters and beautiful flat sandy beaches of Cooya back to Brandon's house. He took us inside his home, showed us how to cook everything, and added an extremely tasty blend of spices to what we had gathered from the several hours we spent at the beach. Everything was delicious, and to my surprise, especially the snails. A day, A crew. Small tour company with Aboriginal guides, hugely authentic exciting experience. Thank you to all three of our tour guides for making this tour a day that I'll never forget.

We booked this tour on our first day of the Queensland trip and it is a great way to start off the whole trip. We started in the morning with Mossman Gorge, took a walk around and getting in the gorge for a very refreshing swim. Bridget, our guide, was very warm and open to questions. It is amazing how much she knows about the forest, the plants and animals. It is also fascinating to learn about the way aboriginal people uses the environment around them. As Bridget manoeuvres herself through the forest, she tells us about the seemingly random plants around her and the forest all of a sudden comes to life. We walked away with a new understanding and appreciation of the forest, and the aboriginal people. The schedule of the day depends on low tide timings, and we did our crabbing in the afternoon that day. We took an amazing walk through the sea to the mangrove swamps. There are heaps of mosquitoes there, and even with mozzie sprays brought by Bridget, I got like 20 bites. We also got to see the Kubirri Warra brothers in action, catching a giant crab and a stingray, which was let go. On the way back, I was not feeling great due to the mozzie bites so Bridget took us to a pharmacy. We really appreciate it! The trips was very memorable and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about the aboriginal culture.

I found that the customization of the tour by our first aboriginal tour guide was quite impressive. I doubt that on any other tour in my life, I will get to taste and smell green ants. Our tour guide who drove us to the Daintree and described a brief history of the aboriginals in the area and the language groups was quite articulate, kind, and open to questions. I would recommend this tour to anyone.

I thought this tour was fantastic. Our guide was an aboriginal woman who was very open when answering questions. First we went out into the water with our spears and one of our group speared a crab - into the bucket it went. We didn't see other crabs but we moved on to various other mussels and clams in the mangroves. We had quite a bucket of food when we headed back. This was cooked and we ate it as a sort of morning tea. I am not big on shellfish and everything was delicious. In addition to what we had caught, he cooked up a fish soup and some fried fish, some bread and some muffins. It was all great. From there we went to the Daintree for a quick lunch - we were running late - and then our guided walk. I was concerned about this because the tour description made a big deal that you needed to be in good shape. That was only partly true. You do need to be steady on your feet and able to walk up and down rock steps but the walk is somewhat leisurely so walking more slowly than others was not an issue. We were shown lots of interesting plants. Back at the visitor center there was an enormous spider but they said it was not poisonous. I highly recommend this tour! It was very informative and well-done.

This was so much fun. Our tour guides taught us so much in a fun way. I was bitten head to toe though out the trip in Auz by mosquitoes. When we went for a swim in the special pool, Dean, one of our guides saw the extent of the damage to my body. He then ground up some leaves, mixed it with water and proceeded to let me wash myself in it. The plant mixture makes an antiseptic so that I would not get ill from the bites and it stopped the itching. Next day the bites were nearly gone! We ate freshly cooked crab caught by the group and cooked by our guide and hunter "Link" he also gave us a didgeridoo lesson and interesting facts on his tribe. It was great to be on a tour where you could get down and dirty with the locals. We were allowed to keep the paintings that we did with our art lesson and they now grace our wall. This is a kicked back, must do.

This tour is a definite. Whether you are an Aussie who thinks they know a thing or two about the Aboriginal culture or whether you are a full blood tourist. My tour favoutrite parts of the tour where the art class at Janbal and the hunting with Brandon (I do hope I spelt this right) in the mangroves. The things I learnt made me realize just how different each group of Aboriginals are from each other. Just be careful that you read and ring to confirm the itinerary. What I read on the net via viator and what actually happened were a little different but still a great and worth while day.

Very nice experience. We caught mud crabs and found mussels - we had a lot of fun in the mud. Beeing in the art galery and painting by our own was good as well. I would have love to spent a bit more time with the Aboriginals.

Spear-hunting was really great! Though we did not get to catch anything, Brandon did catch a reef shark and a stingray. It was amazing to see his fishing skills, and how easy he made it look! Going through the mangroves, we picked up some shells and he showed us which ones were good to eat or not. It was really interesting to learn about traditional hunting and way of live. Definitely recommended! You'll get wet but you'll love it!

Helen W, aug. 2010
I found the Aboriginal Daintree Rainforest Tour to be very interesting. The guide was terrific - it was just a pity that us 'city slickers' didn't do much crab catching. I began to wonder if they just waited for the guide!! We would have starved if it had been up to us!! The tasting of our catch was great - and the damper and muffins were the best. I will be trying damper and golden syrup from now on! Was all very worthwhile.
