This cooking workshop exceeded our expectations! The workshop began with a tour of the market in Avignon, with a very interesting background on a variety of products including fish, cheese, olives and other goods, along with samples. We then prepped and cooked a lovely meal including tapenade, mushroom risotto, duck breast, cake with plum sauce and plenty of delicious French wines. Our instructor, Jon, was very engaging and informative, and a lot of fun in addition! I would highly recommend as a good way to sample local products from the Avignon area.

A Great, Fun Time in a Special Location
    Matthew_W, Dec 2023
A very pleasant experience inside the Halles Market, which has an awe-inspiring array of food vendors and is located just steps from the heart of the city. We learned cooking techniques and a lot about the food while we helped the chef prepare our own lunch, and we had the pleasure to have lunch served to us by helpful and courteous staff. Chef John lived in California and his English first-language good. I would recommend doing this early in your stay in Avignon so you gain some comfort in shopping the market and know what to look for.

We loved attending the cooking class, the whole family tried everything offered including the kids. Getting to work with the group to make an amazing meal was a blast. Can’t wait to try the recipes at home. Made sure to pick up some of chef’s recommendations to take home.
    Fun Food Expérience with Friends

Aside from the difficult parking garage, the workshop presenter (chef) was quite friendly and entertaining. He was familiar with American food culture and did a great job of comparing and contrasting with the culture and food traditions of Provence. The location in the marketplace was also beneficial. The workshop was well organized, the assistant was helpful and friendly. Most of all, the food was scrumptious and we look forward to replicating these recipes at home.
    Great cooking class

Learning to cook duck, tour of market and tasting of cheeses. Jonathan was very entertaining. We were staying just around the corner from the market.

Chef Jonathan (Jon) was very professional and fun. We learned a lot about cooking and the meal we all prepared was delicious!
    Nice class but overpriced.

I enjoyed meeting other food enthusiasts. The class was different than previous cooking classes. We were not given the recipes for the food we created. We did get to eat it but I’d like to eat it again some time.
    Response from Host, Apr 2023
Hello Juliann.. thank you for your review. Usually the cook send the recipe after the cooking workshop by email. So I'm sure you will receive it soon. If you like it that much you're welcome whenever you want to eat it again :)
    Fun and very instructional

Loved the market shopping experience with Chef Jonathan. He has great tips for picking out anything. We tried a variety of locally grown/produced olives and cheeses with him. The class was wonderful -there were just 6 of us. Food was great and will be looking forward to returning next week!

Love all the cooking /shopping tips from Chef Jonathan. The food was wonderful. With 14 people in the class it was a little crowded.

This kind of class is why you came to France
    Margaret_R, Sep 2022
AMAZING class. I was worried it may be too simple since I love cooking at home. Not all all. Great for beginners and more experienced cooks alike. My class even had some folks who had been before and intended to come a third time after this class. The menu changes based on what’s fresh in the market that day, the season, and food restrictions of classmates. Definitely more complex recipes but the technique was broken down very clearly. I really appreciated being able to take these lessons home to my own kitchen.

    Great Experience and Great Food
    Dootsun, Jul 2022
We had a party of seven friends and family. It was great fun, the location was perfect, the food was delicious, and chef Jon was wonderful. We would highly recommend this cooking class.
Super informative class, chef is a bit rude
    Isabel_M, Jul 2022
Pros: We cook often, but we learned many great new tips that we will keep with us The food we made was excellent! Particularly loved the potato puree and almond cake with peach compote Market hall setting is cool to walk around Cons: Chef John was... pretty rude. Not sure if he was having an off day because he was simultaneously babysitting his kids during the class, but he often came across arrogant and impatient which was awkward for everyone The class was booked for 12 people and only had 6 cutting boards and a small space. Luckily 4 people didn't show up or we would have been watching most of the time instead of doing anything. Class should definitely be capped at 8.

Had a blast! Was great to learn from a chef in Les Halles market and spend some time walking around the market. We’ve been using some of Jon’s techniques and ingredients since we’ve been home. If Jon offers you mustard crusted pork filet mignon, say yes! This experience gets my highest recommendation!
    Just do it!
    Patricia_W, Jun 2022
So awesome!!!! Do this experience!!!! Jonathan is an amazing chef and you will absolutely not regret it!!
    Just delightful. Don’t miss out!
    Hayden_H, Jun 2022
Truly wonderful! Johnathan is expert, engaging, passionate about his food and local ingredients, and a lovey bloke to boot. Our small group class (there were five total) cooked three courses including a scrummy summer ratatouille, and we each got the chance to fillet a monkfish. On our tour of the market, we were serenaded by a chicken… you’ll understand when you experience it for yourself! Johnathan is totally bilingual and switched seamlessly between French and English to accommodate everyone in the class. The wine flowed freely as we sat down to eat in the little restaurant, surrounded by locals who’d come by (as they seem in the habit of doing — no higher recommendation, I’d say!) to sample the class’s delights. I’ve done a lot of cooking classes in my time and this was up there with the best of them! Please book this experience!
Fun Sunday morning in a French Kitchen!

Learning new techniques for cooking. Learned about foods. Enjoyed the relaxed “family” atmosphere & Le Halles is an amazing market!

Very interesting well organised and a good menu. I enjoyed it very much and the group were very nice so we all got along very well.
Overbooked in a very small kitchen. Not worth it!
    Susan_B, May 2022
This was really a demonstration class, not a cooking class. The chef did all the cooking using the one stove top and oven. Students chopped vegetables and cleaned fish. That was it. We could have learned as much watching a YouTube video. Also, the class was overbooked. Optimally, the course should be limited to 5 people, because that is all the kitchen can comfortably hold. Instead, there were 7 people in the class. There were only knives and cutting boards for 6, so it wasn’t possible for everyone to fully participate, which was disappointing. Two participants were working on the short side of the counter, sharing one knife and cutting board, and were constantly bumped and jostled by wait staff coming and going through the 36” aisle. Imagine 3 hours of that! We did share a nice lunch afterwards, but it would have been a better use of time and money to just go buy lunch there and not bother with the class.

The cooking workshop was great! A little confusion with transportation to the class as driver didn’t show but once we got there all was terrific! Fun, informative and interactive! A must do!
