What To Expect

Your tour starts at the Chinatown Gate in Chicago, where you meet your guide and begin your food exploration with dim sum dumplings. Then continue with a sample from the Xi'an region, perhaps a spicy meat sandwich, before walking through Chinatown Square, passing by markets and souvenir shops.

Stop for a bite of Beijing-style duck, try a Szechuan hot pot, and enjoy a custard tart from the oldest bakery in the neighborhood. Then end your tastings with traditional Chinese tea. All within a few blocks, you'll have experienced foods from different regions of China. Your tour concludes back at the starting point.

The dim sum was amazing, as well as the Szechuan chicken, and finally the beef noodle bowl. Janine, our tour guide was a treasure who entertained us with the history of Chinatown while keeping us on schedule. We were there celebrating my besties birthday and the whole group sang to her. We left full and satisfied, a little more educated and feeling we had spent time with new friends! Highly recommend!

Great experience and I am rating this top notch since I discovered something new to love! I travel a lot and have taken food tours of Chinatowns in LA and NYC so delighted to find new things on a menu and appreciate the flavor as much as I enjoyed learning the history. And having Jeff as a guide was a perk since I've already been on tour with him before and knew from the first bite I was in good hands. Highly recommend!

The Chinatown Food and Walking Tour hosted by “Chicago Gandalf” was epic! Each restaurant was so gracious. By combing the history of the food and people, our host totally spiced up the experience.

This was an absolutely fantastic tour. My tour guide was Jeff, and he is what made the experience. All the restaurants we went to were either Michelin star, or heavily awarded restaurants. All the food was delicious, and you definitely left feeling full. I loved the fact that our tour guide seemed to know the owners personally. It made you feel like more of a local in Chinatown than a tourist. What I wasn’t expecting, is that we also got a tour of the city outside of the restaurants, and we had a great history lesson to go along with. Jeff was an amazing story teller, and made the “learning” come to life during the tour. He made it super enjoyable to learn something I didn’t know much about. I left with my stomach and brain full! For anyone considering a tour (whether you live in Chicago or are visiting) I would have paid double for the experience we got. I purchased this as a Christmas present, and it was the best gift I’ve given by far. Definitely a MUST DO!!

Great and varied food selection, interesting historical tidbits, a good amount of walking between locales (which we loved). We eat a lot of different kinds of food, so it was great to get to try some things we had never had before! We have a few new spots we'll return to with other family and friends!

Perfect mix of history, great food, fascinating stories, and great sightseeing around the area.

Very good mix of history, great food, entertaining host, and sightseeing. We have done dozens of food tours all over the country and this one was definitely in the top three. We highly recommend this tour. Also, for this tour and other food tours, we recommend bringing small tuppperware containers; the food can be a lot and it's all delicious, so if you are traveling with a partner, I recommend y'all split one serving and save the other serving for later. Otherwise, you'll have to decide whether to stuff your selves or leave some food on the table; up to you.

Jeff was an extremely knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. We chose this tour because our family of six (including teens and college age kids) are staying in Chinatown and wanted to kick off our visit with insider info and to get acquainted with the area. Our tour definitely checked those boxes and then some! Come hungry and do NOT plan on dinner afterward! This tour highlights the best of various cuisines that Chinatown has to offer and after four restaurant stops, we were all very full and satisfied. The restaurant choices and food picks were top notch and everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed our traveling dinner and some very fascinating history of China and Chicago’s Chinatown. Five+ stars to Jeff for making this experiences incredibly entertaining and enjoyable!!

Each piece of food was delicious with our favorite being the chili dry chicken. Our tour guide Lillian was so nice, knowledgeable, and communicative. She made sure to address any concerns we had and gave us plenty of time to enjoy each stop. I have been on a lot of food tours and the food choices here are top quality. No fillers to pad time.
