This is a good news- bad news review. We decided on a 3 star rating. 5 stars for our driver Andre. 5 stars for the trip (pounding rain and wind is not under control of the tour, you get what you get in March in Ireland :) 1 star for the ability to communicate with the tour operators. 1 star for the safety of the bus. No one should feel unsafe for over 7 hours in a vehicle.
We were 7 minutes late (6:52 arrived at pick up spot) for our Friday tour, thought the cab would be quickest route but traffic was insane even at 6:15 am. Note for others that even 30 minutes may not get you across town in a vehicle, better to walk. Tried calling ahead to let them know, but no answer as office was not open until 7:00 am, after the scheduled 6:45 meeting/departure. There was no other number to contact the tour. No one tried to contact us. We missed the bus. Finally could speak with someone at Paddywagon tours after making frequent calls after 7:00. The agent informed us that we missed the tour, but set us up for a new date when we enquired if we could join a tour a couple of days later. This was greatly appreciated! Next time we walked to the meeting point and made sure to arrive 20 minutes early. This time the bus arrived just after 6:45 and we then waited an additional 10 minutes for late arrivals? So we missed by 7 minutes Friday and didn't leave until after 7:00 on Sunday waiting for others? Inconsistent, but at least we still could enjoy the tour. Our driver, Andre, informed us that he would be driving and narrating the tour. While he was an experienced driver, he had never narrated as well before, as he typically had a professional guide aboard to share highlights. We are not sure why there was no guide. Alone, Andre was going to give it his best shot. He was adorable, patient and offered interesting history and information the best he could, given English was not his first language. He had a great sense of humor and it was great fun to listen to his stories. He was forthcoming that he couldn't focus on the curvy, narrow roads and share information at the same time and we were fine that he'd rather keep the tour safe than entertain. Off we went across the island first to discover the onboard WiFi didn't work. This wasn't a deal breaker. The drive was absolutely lovely. We watched the countryside go by as we traveled down the highway, only to discover that as the weather became cooler and the rain more intense, that the bus' windshield defrost didn't work. So as we proceeded along the highway, the windshield fogged up impairing Andre's ability to see. We had to pull over a few times to allow him to wipe down the windshield. Engineers and drivers aboard all tried to help fix the defrost. After a few calls, he got the defrost to work briefly. Galway was lovely and we enjoyed a great bakery and ate our quiches outside. Note that breakfast restaurants were not open yet, most not open till 10 or 10:30. Perhaps this was only on Sunday? The walk around town was rainy but beautiful and serene. We were glad we prepared for rain and wind because it was still worth the trip. Next toward the Cliff's via the Burren with no driving along cliffs or any treacherous roads but narrow and winding roads required Andre's attention so passengers frequently stood in the front to wipe off the windshield so he could see! A brief stop at the Burren area was very cool and "other-world-ish". Lunch at the cafeteria style cafe was very efficient. The soups were hearty and delicious with many other options from sandwiches to poached salmon available for your purchase. Then on to the Cliffs of Moher and as luck would have it, we arrived to pelting wind and rain. The fog was so thick we couldn't see anything past the slate railings. Not to be thwarted, we proceeded to O'Brien's Tower to try for a glimpse of the cliffs. No luck, so we toured the indoor gift shop and visitor centre which was interesting and not as crowded as expected, probably due to the time of year and weather limiting the tourism that day. As we left the visitor centre for the bus, the wind and rain subsided and we ran back up the walk and finally had a beautiful, albeit hazy view of the Cliffs to the water's edge. I imagine it's spectacular on a clear day but we got the more "romantic" viewing. Even on this windy, drenching rainy day I would say it was worth the trip, just be prepared for all weather. The three hour trip back was pretty intense with the glare of lights through moisture on the windshield had passengers up frequently to wipe it. We had heard great reviews of Paddywagon tours even from other tour operators. We must imagine that the lack of functioning of a basic safety feature must be a fluke, but shame on them for placing 62 souls on a bus on which the driver couldn't see through his windshield or to his mirrors. Thank you Andre for your patience and perseverance.
