Overview

Visit the Eagle’s Nest in Berchtesgaden, Adolf Hitler’s famous mountaintop retreat, on this day trip from Munich. Travel by air-conditioned coach through Bavaria’s lush mountainscapes, and ride a bus and elevator to the lodge, 6,148 feet (1,834 meters) up Mt. Kehlstein. See where Hitler entertained dignitaries, view the hall where weddings and conferences were staged, and explore the terrace to admire the spectacular Alpine views—vistas that Hitler, ironically, found challenging due to his vertigo. Enjoy time for lunch (own expense) and the option to visit the Nazi Documentation Center Museum.
  • Day trip to the Berchtesgaden Eagle’s Nest, the former mountain retreat of Adolf Hitler, from Munich, with a professional guide
  • Absorb views of Alpine peaks and pastures on a drive southwest through Bavaria
  • Ride a bus and elevator up Mt. Kehlstein to the Eagle’s Nest mountain lodge
  • Explore Hitler’s one-time retreat, where he received visiting dignitaries
  • See the chambers and many original features, including a mantelpiece gifted by Mussolini
  • Ogle the incredible terrace views over the mountains and to Lake Königssee
  • Visit the Berchtesgaden salt mines if bad weather prevents access to the Eagle’s Nest

Although it was a wet day, and the Eagles Nest was above the clouds causing us to miss out on the spectacular views, it was still awesome to visit such a historic spot. Great tour guide and the bus was great.

Not the Eagles Nest, but BETTER
Paula_J, May 2024
We were informed that we would be going to the salt mine instead of the Eagles’ Nest since the road was not open. We said — okay, at least the drive will be a good view. But when we got on the bus—Ursula said she was taking us to the Bergdorf and the document center. We lucked out. It was so much better. A fantastic experience and a guide who knew so much relevant and insightful information. The Eagle’s Nest was an after thought to Hitler’s house where the real history took place. If you can — I would recommend this over the little used but better known Eagle’s Nest which was just a tea house and visited only a few times by Hitler. None of the important events took place there.
Let down and lied to

Despite being assured the trip was ok to book and we wouldn't be let down.... we arrived to a cancelled trip. We had paid fot the Eagkes Nest & were informed it was the salt mine. No. That wasn't what we'd booked. Still waiting fir a reply from Viator.
Fabulous day trip for history enthusiasts

The drive to Obersalzburg is beautiful. The bus is comfortable and clean. Lottie our guide was very organised and provided in depth information on the region and historical events. Although Eagles Nest was closed the tour was still good value as the documentation centre, underground bunker system and berghof visits were incredible and well worth the effort as was our lovely stop in Berchtesgaden a beautiful alpine town.
Bucket list visit

The trip was a bucket list item me, the weather was favourable and the views were amazing. Sadly because of the end of the season some of the shops were closed. Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining but it was a long day.
Great tour

What a great trip! Everything was spot on! I recommend this trip! The tour guide and bus driver were fantastic!
Where was Berchtesgaden?
Joann_R, Oct 2023
The tour started off good and the guide was so friendly. Very nice drive to destination. Very organized, we knew where and when to be the whole tour. The VERY sad part was no stop in Berchtesgaden That was the reason for our tour. For some reason we were brought to a place to eat near the bus parking where we spent 2 hours. We then left and drove quickly through town and drove through a national park where we then pulled off to take some pictures of nothing special. 150$ for tour and 69$ In entry and didn’t see what the tour specially said it was going to. It would have been cheaper to rent a car. We really should get a refund on half the trip.
Great from A to Z

Wonderful mix of beautiful views and sobering information
Samantha_M, Oct 2023
Amazing views, the documentation centre and bunker are amazing but very sobering. Ursula was a terrific guide, very knowledgeable and invested in us all having a good experience
Great day trip

Ursula, was great during the whole trip alerting us when to get ready for photos along the way. She was so knowledgeable about everything about the location and the history of the site and the location would recommend this trip.
Beautiful views!
Lynne_J, Sep 2023
Incredible views from the Eagles Nest. We were there on a clear blue sky - very lucky. So glad we went.
Amazing views
Jennifer_O, Sep 2023
Amazing views, especially on a sunny day. It’s a long 2 hour drive from Munich but worthwhile seeing.
The historical...
Julie_R, Sep 2023
The historical significance and unchanged condition of this site are the appeal. Unfortunately, the brass elevator to the top was broken, meaning we missed out on that experience ...and had to climb the final 100+ meters to the top on the foot path, which was a bit of a challenge.
DO NOT GO (negative reviews are being deleted)
Kelsey_P, Sep 2023
DO NOT DO THIS TOUR or anything else operated by Grey Line Tours in Munich. We got onto the bus and as the bus was departing were informed that the elevator to the Eagle’s Nest was broken and it would be a strenuous 30 minute walk to see it. We were then informed that we also wouldn’t see the town or the documentation center. I quickly looked online because this was different than what I was expecting based on the Viator description. Lo and behold there were several recent negative reviews describing the same experience all of which mysteriously disappeared while we were on the tour. Trapped on the bus, we decided to make the best of a bad situation. The additional 33 euro fee was immediately collected for the bus to the top of the mountain. This price was to include the elevator and there was no discount for not having it included. Our guide then proceeded to tell us factually inaccurate information about Hitler (like getting his birthdate wildly wrong). Our guide also informed us that as a tour group we were not allowed to eat at the restaurant at the top of the mountain and the only place we could eat at was next to the bus stop. We then get off the tour bus to get onto the Eagles Nest bus (after being instructed by our tour guide to buy drinks on the tour bus for our strenuous walk, because they would be more expensive at the gift store, they were the same price). Our tour guide then ran around asking us to help her find other members of the tour group. To be clear, this is not a moderate walk. It is strenuous and should not be attempted by those with physical limitations. It is an incline for 20+ minutes with several stairs. Eagles Nest is nothing special and you CAN eat at the top. We didn’t have time to eat because our Eagles Nest bus was scheduled to depart. We arrived at the base and ate an atrocious meal at the bus stop cafe. We then had to wait two hours at the bus stop doing absolutely nothing. Finally we got on the bus and found out that if we had waited less than ten more minutes at the top the elevator would have been working again. There are plenty of things to do in Munich. This should not be one of them. Don’t waste your precious time on this.

Taxi Service to Eagles Nest
Deborah_R, Sep 2023
Set your expectations low and you won’t be disappointed. This “tour” is basically a taxi service to Eagles Nest and a forced lunch in the only restaurant near the bus stop. In fact you are strongly encouraged NOT to eat at the Eagles Nest restaurant because it is “too touristy.” Tour guide Beatrix was very sweet and tried very hard. The bus had no A/C on an 80 degree day. The microphone wasn’t working probably. Historical info told on the trip there was repeated on the trip back. And despite the tour info saying it included one hour at the Documentation Center, once we were on the bus we were told it doesn’t open until next week.
Awesome Driver and Tour Guide
ssteele, Sep 2023
This was the best tour from our vacation....Elisabeth and Andreas were awesome. Elisabeth was very knowledgeable and shared alot of history with us, which made the tour better. Andreas was a great driver and very prompt and pleasant. I would recommend this tour with these 2 employees to everyone. Thank you for making our vacation great.
Good overall
Loretta_K, Sep 2023
Overall, a good experience. Way too much time was spent at gift shop at Obersalzberg. I thought we’d stop in town of Berchtesgaden as name of your indicated. We had 2 hours at the cafe and gift shop! Also Beatrix should spare guests from opinions on environment and politics in Germany….stick to the facts, not her opinions.
Amazing Tour
Sherry_L, Sep 2023
Elisabeth did a great job bringing this tour to life. She took care of us and answered our questions!
View from the top.
Ron_K, Sep 2023
The view from Eagles Nest, was fantastic. However the tour should include a stop at Berchtesgaden, instead of driving through the town.
Elizabeth was superb.
Ronnie_L, Sep 2023
A great experience. Our guide Elizabeth was so helpful with everything and answered all our questions.
