What To Expect

Begin your tour with pickup from your hotel in Salzburg or meet at a central pickup point. Hop aboard your minivan with your local driver and guide and take off on your original 'Sound of Music' experience. While you travel, learn fun facts and behind-the-scenes stories about the classic musical and sing along with some of the beloved songs playing in the background.

Travel toward the 17th-century Schloss Hellbrunn (Hellbrunn Castle) to visit the reconstructed garden gazebo where Liesl and Rolf sang 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen.'

Afterward, drive to the stunning region of Salzkammergut and marvel at the Alpine mountains and glassy lakes featured in the opening scenes. Pass the charming village of St. Gilgen, home to the movie’s mountain railway.

Next, spot the yellow church in Mondsee where Maria’s wedding famously took place. Then, return to Salzburg to discover two more iconic locations: the Mirabell Palace and Nonnberg Abbey, where the convent scenes were filmed.

Your tour ends at the original starting point. Since this is a private tour, be sure to list any special interests you have at the time of booking so that your guide will know them in advance, and then, on the day, talk to your guide about any sights you want to see more or less of, so they can tailor your itinerary around your wishes.

Fantastic private tour with our guide Leo

Leo is a great guide and driver with a very nice Mercedes. He picked us up at the train station and drove us all over Salzburg. Leo is friendly and knowledgeable. He told us all about the making of the movie and the true story of the family. There are many funny stories about the movie, but no spoiler alerts here. Leo also pointed out things we may enjoy doing in Salzburg after the tour and explained how to get back to the train station, which was an easy walk. We took the train from Munich in the morning and returned in the evening. It was not too crowded even though we were there on the May Day holiday.

We combined this with a private Mozart Tour. Our guide, Peter, was fantastic and combined the tours very nicely. He was kind and thoughtful to keep a good portion of the tour out of the cold weather that we had on the day of the tour.

Happy we paid to do the expensive private tour on Christmas Day. Interesting and knowledgeable guide. Very structured tour with rigid timelines however. Showed some flexibility when we had an extra 15-20 minutes to visit Maria Plain church. I’m such a Sound of Music fan and have wanted to visit the Salzburg sites since I was 5. Would have like just a little more time to soak in the stories but the tour is a very strict 4 hours.

We took a private tour of The Sound of Music sites. Richard was our driver; it was wonderful to hear the background stories from filming. Loved going up into the mountains as it was a beautiful day. Would highly recommend the tour.

Helenka was our guide and she was great - totally in the spirit of Sound of Music. My friend has seen Sound of Music at least 30 times while I've seen it only a few times so Helenka really got me hooked and even trying to sing along with the music, ok well hum really, since I'm an ex-smoker. We started off at Mirabell Gardens and Pegasus Fountain where Maria & the children danced. We passed Nonnorg Convent and saw Schloss Leopoldskron where the Trapp family lived but is now a luxury hotel.We visited Hellbrunn Palace and of course, the famous Gazebo.We finished off the tour by visiting the church in Mondsee (magnificent interior) where Maria and the baron got married. All the while, Helenka told us interesting anecdotes about the filming and played the music while recounting the matching scene. It made me want to watch the movie again. She also pointed out other points of interest unrelated to the film along the way, which I really appreciated. Honestly, I went on this tour because of my friend but ended up loving it.

Definitely suggest a private tour - some of the group tours are very large. We had a very comfortable van and very friendly (and funny) guide. We hadn’t seen the movie in a while so his explanations were very helpful, and we enjoyed hearing the true story of the von Trapps.

This was a wonderful experience! Our host was really knowledgeable and you could tell he enjoyed what he did. We loved having more a personal tour rather then being packed into a tour bus with hundreds of people. We had a group of 8 with two small children. They definitely accommodated everybody’s needs. The cooking class at the end was also really enjoyable! We learned how to make some awesome food. And the cook was really engaging. We would highly recommend this tour if you are in salzburg. FYI: if you do the cooking class. Just know they do not want small children in the class. So plan on having someone watch the kids while others cook. That was really the only negative of the whole thing.

Leopold was a superb tour guide - so knowledgeable about the area and history. And an expert on the Sound of Music filming and the real life Von Trapp family. A history lesson and entertainment at the same time. It was a very special tour for our daughter Gisele as well. We highly recommend it!

Eric was a fantastic and very knowledgeable tour guide with a great sense of humor. The van we rode in was immaculate. We saw many Sound of Music points as well as some Salzburg highlights. I would definitely recommend this tour!

Such a great tour! We saw all the sights from the movie, background on where the actors stayed, and had an absolutely pleasant day! Would recommend more time in Salzburg than just a day, so much to see and do. There is also a breakfast option for the tour, that lets you eat breakfast in the Trapp's house, so look for that one too!
