Coast-to-Coast Walkway

Auckland, Auckland

The basics

The Coast-to-Coast Walkway is a mostly paved, signed route passing through Auckland’s downtown and neighborhoods, forming a north–south line that bisects the city. Walkers can tackle part or all of the path; the entire thing takes roughly 4 hours to cross. Save time to explore as you go, though. Popular sightseeing spots on the walkway include the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Auckland Domain, Mt. Eden, Cornwall Park, One Tree Hill, and Onehunga Bay Reserve.

Things to know before you go

  • Most of the Coast-to-Coast Walkway is accessible to travelers with wheelchairs and strollers, but there are stairs through Auckland Teachers College and Melville Park.

  • If you’re walking the trail independently, it’s a good idea to download a map with the route prior to departure—signage in some areas can be confusing.

  • Bring a bottle to refill at fountains along the way.

  • Public toilets can be found along the path.

How to get there

You can explore the Coast-to-Coast Walkway northbound or southbound. The northern point is the Te Wero Bridge at Viaduct Harbour on Auckland’s bustling commercial waterfront, while the southernmost point is Onehunga Bay Reserve, where you’ll find public toilets and a playground. Most visitors walking the entire path return via public transit: a 10-minute walk from Onehunga Bay Reserve is Onehunga Station; Britomart Station is a 7-minute walk from Te Wero Bridge.

When to get there

The walkway is great for exploring in any season. Cool weather in September, October, and December is ideal for walking, and sites along the way tend to be quiet. Warmer, drier summer months from January through April bring crowds and a lineup of festivals; you could even watch January’s Auckland Anniversary Regatta from the walkway’s starting point at Te Wero Bridge.

Best walks in Auckland

New Zealand’s biggest city is a paradise for walkers, who have their pick of nature trails and urban rambles. A series of 0.6-mile (1-kilometer) loop tracks form the Maungauika/North Head Historic Walk, accessible via ferry from downtown Auckland. Another ferry shuttles hikers to the 4.3-mile (7-kilometer) Rangitoto Summit Track, which climbs a dormant volcano with spectacular views. Among the most family-friendly options are walking trails within Auckland Domain, a park featuring native plants and a duck pond.
