With fewer visitors than other butterfly reserves and handy proximity to Mexico City, the Piedra Herrada Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is one of the best spots to admire the orange-and-black creatures. Hike or ride a horse through the forest to reach the butterflies, which coat the fir trees before bursting into flight and fluttering among the treetops.

Definitely worth doing!
The tour was great, but it is a lot of walking, often up hill! You definitely need to be fit to do it, but our day was great, and our tour guide Gabriella was great and very informative. And our driver Jorge did a perfect job. The butterflies and waterfall were beautiful. It was a great experience!

Monarch Butterfly Tour from Mexico City
We took a private tour from Mexico City. The drive is around three hours one way. Our tour guide George was great and shared lots of information about Mexico and the culture along the way. At the sanctuary we chose to ride horses up the mountain to the location where the Monarchs migrate. The horses take you part of the way and then you are on foot for the remainder of the hike. The hike is challenging. The terrain is rugged. At the migration point, we were only allowed to stay about 15 mins. Seeing the Monarch’s was outstanding! They flutter and land everywhere! Our guides from the sanctuary were kind, patient and friendly. After we hiked back down we enjoyed authentic food made by locals. Overall a wonderful experience. Viator does not share the amount of time spent at the migration point and this is why I rated it four stars. However Monarchs are magical and I highly recommend this experiment!

Too hard to get on the top, not many butterflies to ser in November. Best time is February-March
The wait for an hour for the pick up was not ok. The help center kept saying there was no reservation 😔
