Scharloo has transformed from its elite beginnings into a district of opportunities—today, the mansions house coworking spaces, start-ups, and other creative endeavors. You’ll find dreamy B&Bs, immersive murals, and architecture that can make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Tours that pass through typically focus on the history of Scharloo’s original Jewish community and the establishment of the luxurious villas that remain.
Don’t forget the camera—there’s plenty to capture.
The elegant houses are great backdrops for a photo shoot, so wear a classy dress or a nice button-down before you smile for the camera.
Make sure to slather on the sunscreen.
Scharloo is a historic neighborhood of Willemstad across the inlet and a short walk from Punda. Cross the Queen Wilhelmina Bridge from Punda and turn right down Plaza Mundo Merced road to arrive in Scharloo. If you’re catching a bus into town, the closest stop is the main bus station in Punda on Waaigatplein road.
Scharloo is a charming place for a morning or evening stroll—on Sunday evenings, pop into La Vie en Rose Curacao on Scharlooweg road for French-style pastries and a luxurious high tea. The neighborhood is relatively quiet, so it’s a nice place to wander if you don’t have scheduled plans.
This small park is home to a colorful sculpture bordered by mural-covered buildings. The highlight is a fantastical floral mural by local artist Francis Sling—a windswept tree appears ready to blow right off the building, and the blue of the building blends into the sky above. It’s a great stop on a walk through the artsy section of the neighborhood.
