After King James I (Jaume 1) conquered the Balearic Islands in 1229, he began the conversion of a Moorish-era mosque in present-day Palma de Mallorca (Majorca) into a grand Catalan Gothic-style cathedral overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The golden sandstone façade, the city’s most notable landmark, took more than 400 years to complete.

Great walking tour of Palma
Had a great 3 hour private walking tour with Juan of No Frills Excursions. Juan provided a local insider’s perspective of Mallorca. We walked around the Royal Palace of Almudaina, the Cathedral, the Arab Baths and saw centuries old palaces that have now turned into private residences. We even stopped by a Starbucks so I could buy a souvenir coffee mug of the Balearic Islands. The tour ended with a city sightseeing boat tour to see the many cruise ships docked in Palma for the day. Juan was super friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about local history - especially Junipero Serra, the famous Spanish missionary from Mallorca who helped establish California missions in the 18th century. I’m a Bay Area California native who grew up hearing a lot about Junipero Serra. Juan helped me learn not just about Mallorca, but California history as well. He also knows the best spots to take photos. If you sign up for the one day tour, definitely ask for Juan. He’s awesome!
