Rajpath

Central Secretariat, New Delhi, Delhi

The Basics

Like much of Central Delhi, Rajpath was designed by British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. It was set up to offer an uninterrupted view of the new city from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, which was the Viceroy’s palace at the time and today serves as the official residence of the president of India. Popular attractions along the road include the National Museum, the National Gallery of Modern Art, and the arched memorial India Gate, all common stops on Delhi tours.

  • Rajpath is a must-visit for those interested in colonial architecture and urban planning.

  • If you plan to visit on foot, wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection.

  • Be careful when crossing roads as traffic in the area, as with the rest of Delhi, can be haphazard.

When to Get There

The best time to visit Rajpath depends greatly on the season, particularly if you are visiting on foot. It’s pleasant day and night November through February, but it’s best to avoid walking during times of high pollution. If you just want to see area attractions from the outside, the sites here are prettiest around dusk, when many are illuminated.

If traveling by metro, take the Yellow Line to Central Secretariat or Udyog Bhawan to access the western part of the street. What’s in a Name?

When Rajpath was first constructed, it was called King’s Way in honor of George V, who moved the capital of British India from Kolkata to Delhi. However, it was renamed Rajpath (a literal Hindi translation of “King’s Way”) after India gained its independence from the British in 1947.
