Oman trip ideas
Nizwa was once the prosperous capital of Oman, and the city’s grand mosque was the center of Islamic learning. Built in 1668, the massive Nizwa Fort was a formidable stronghold, with its high-walled chambers and huge central tower. Don’t miss wandering the main souk, which is best known for its silver jewelry. Many travelers combine a visit to Nizwa with a day trip to the UNESCO-listed Bahla Fort, a short drive away.
Make sure to adhere to social customs and dress in an appropriate manner.
It can get very hot in Nizwa—don’t forget sun protection.
Nizwa is located in northern Oman. To get there, drive a 4WD vehicle, or take an approximately-2-hour bus ride from Muscat.
For the most pleasant weather, visit Nizwa sometime between December and May.
The Al-Hajar Mountain range is home to plenty of natural wonders to explore, and important historic sites such as the cities of Rustaq and Samail. The arid setting is broken up by small towns, date palm plantations, and the occasional lush oasis.
