Most Punta del Este sightseeing tours include a stroll along the picturesque waterfront in the shadows of the Punta del Este Yacht Club. Come early to visit the harborside fish market, then stroll along the piers, lined with luxury yachts and traditional sailboats, and look out for sea lions lounging on the rocks. For the most impressive views, secure a table at the Yacht Club’s restaurant and dine on the terrace looking out over the meeting point of the Rio de la Plata and the Atlantic Ocean.
Punta del Este Yacht Club is located right by the main harbor and cruise port, just a 2-minute walk from the waterfront. A number of buses from different areas of the city stop close to the harbour, but the easiest way to arrive, especially in the evening hours, is by taxi—it’s an about 10-minute drive from downtown.
The most atmospheric time to visit the Yacht Club is at sunset. Book a table on the terrace and enjoy dinner as you watch the sunset over the marina, then stick around for cocktails looking out over the illuminated waterfront. The Yacht Club also hosts several regattas, including the Rolex Cup, throughout the year.
Punta del Este is famous for its scenic coastline and beautiful beaches. After strolling around the harbor and visiting the Yacht Club, head to Brava Beach to see Mario Irrazábal’s The Hand sculpture, hop on a boat to Sea Lion Island, or visit Casapueblo, the museum-residence of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, perched high on the sea cliffs. Sun-seekers will be spoiled for choice when it comes to beaches—Bikini Beach is the place to go for celebrity spotting and all-night parties, while Playa Brava is a hotspot for surfing and water sports, and tranquil Playa Mansa is favored by families.
