Queenstown is all about the mountains, lakes, and great outdoors, but sometimes you might need to get indoors and out of the elements. Time Tripper is a state-of-the-art animated show situated under Lake Wakatipu, that tells the Māori Legend of the Lake and the story of the creation of the Wakatipu region, starting 90 million years ago taking you through to present day Queenstown.
After the show, you’ll get 15 minutes of underwater viewing available afterwards where you can see the famous slinky eels, diving ducks and trout that live under Lake Wakatipu.

You’re not allowed to take photos or videos during the experience
You can’t visit the observatory independently, but have to combine it with the animated presentation
The experience starts at the Main Town Pier in central Queenstown, so is easily accessible on foot or by car from other parts of the town.
The Experience departs every half hour, every day of the year, but operates on different summer and winter timings. It closes earlier in the winter (May to September) and continues late into the evening in summer (October to April). It’s a great option for a cold or rainy day.
When the weather’s fine, a ride on the TSS Earnslaw is a great way to see a different side of Lake Wakatipu. The vintage Edwardian steamship offers a picturesque and relaxing way of seeing Queenstown. It sails several times a day from the Steamer Wharf in central Queenstown.
