The Basics

On the exterior, which has been inspired by Notre-Dame in Paris, look for the gargoyles of animals native to Ecuador such as iguanas, pumas, iguanas, and condors, created by the indigenous artisans. Climb steps, ladders and cross wooden bridges to get to the towers for a perfect view of the Virgen de Quito statue atop the Panecillo.xa0

Most half-day and full-day walking and bus sightseeing tours stop at the basilica, including thematic tours focusing on chocolate-making, urban legends or street food and art. For more mobility, take a scooter around the city and up to Mitad del Mundo; ride the cable car above the city for panoramic views; or ride horseback up the Pichincha volcano.

When to Get There

Basilica del Voto Nacional is open to tourists every day from morning until the afternoon. The church is far less crowded on weekdays, and is particularly striking after dark when it is illuminated in a golden glow. Come in November and December for the colorful Fiestas de Quito when food markets spring up, along with parades, and flamenco shows.

La Capilla de Sacramento

While hard to compete with the gargoyles and the view from the towers, the church features an exquisite side chapel dedicated to the holy sacrament. The Chapel of the Sacrament features exquisitely painted walls, mosaic-tiled floors, and an altar dedicated to the Blessed Virgin.
