Also known as the Lighthouse of the Pacific, Izalco Volcano, which formed in 1770, is the youngest volcano in El Salvador. One of three volcanoes in the Cerro Verde National Park, Izalco is also the park’s most challenging volcano to climb, with hikers who brave the steep slopes rewarded with plenty of fumaroles—steam vents—and epic views.

Great views, great company!
Although it was rainy and cloudy, it was definitely worth the trek! The clouds cleared just long enough for us to have some amazing views of the crater and lake. Marbel was my guide, and he was attentive and jovial. When it started raining he lent me his jacket even though he got drenched to protect my camera gear (and myself). He also took the time to take me to get a COVID test for travel. Made everything so much easier on my side!

If you go to San Salvador you HAVE to do this!
The view once you reach the top of the Volcano is breath taking! Totally worthy the journey. Especially when you have such an amazing tour guide!

Worth it for the views
Driver/guide was very helpful despite limited English and having to hike up with because I was solo and there were no groups to join. I felt the tour was a bit overpriced for experience (just hike and taken to restaurant with view of lake you have to pay for on your own), but I paid for the comfort and ease of getting everywhere without having to plan ahead. Overall, great trip and worth doing.

Volcano Hike!
Climbing to the top of Santa Ana Volcano is a must do when visiting and we were lucky to start early and be at the top with very few people. Salva was our guide and super friendly and informative. The hike itself was moderate and if you need to rest you can definitely take your time. The view from the top does not disappoint. Worth the effort and extremely memorable.
