3 Days in Fort Lauderdale for First Timers

Curated by Nick Dauka travel writer and former South Florida native.

Despite being only an hour away from home, Fort Lauderdale always felt like a vacation. Whether it was to see friends, hang out at the beach, or watch a concert, visiting this city by the seas was always a nice treat.

Fort Lauderdale is similar to its bookends of Palm Beach and Miami, but there are differences. It’s an equally serene setting, and wealth is showcased through its status as the yachting capital of the world, but it’s still accessible for travelers of any budget. Beach bums, fine diners, and families alike will appreciate the wide variety of activities Fort Lauderdale offers.

Warmth is on the weather forecast nearly every day of the year.

If you only have time for one thing, make it the Riverwalk.

Day 1

When you arrive in Fort Lauderdale, you’ll find yourself surrounded by water and wonder. There’s a lot to take in—so make getting from place to place smooth sailing. An all-day water taxi will let you hop on and hop off at more than a dozen stops in Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, including the Riverwalk, lined with galleries, museums, and restaurants.

Once you’ve seen where the water can take you, explore inland—specifically, the Arts and Science District. Start with a tour of three historic museums, and then catch a show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Day 2

Fort Lauderdale is a perfect launch point for day trips to destinations that are vacations in themselves. Get a glimpse at Florida’s wild side while spending the day fishing in the Everglades.

Those who would rather spend all day leisurely exploring Florida’s former Conch Republic will love hanging out in Key West.

If you brought your passport, though, you’ve got an excellent opportunity to have fun under the sun while gaining a Bahamas stamp with a day cruise to Bimini Island.

Day 3

Fill your final day in Fort Lauderdale with more time outdoors, starting with an exciting parasailing trip. From 500 feet (152 meters) in the air, you’ll get an unforgettable top-down look at Fort Lauderdale.

Viewing the shoreline is impressive from above the water, but after a tasty lunch by the beach, get a look at everything beneath the surface of the Atlantic. Dive into the water with a guided snorkeling and Seabob (diving scooter) tour. Then return to shore and wave Fort Lauderdale goodbye.
