It’s possible to experience Girona and the Passeig de la Muralla on a day trip from Barcelona, and some Girona trips from Barcelona include not only this fascinating city but Figueres and other Costa Brava towns and villages. But it’s well worth staying one or more nights in the city and allowing it more time. Many Girona walking tours, including the Game of Thrones tours that showcase filming locations, include a hike up to one of the wall towers for city views. But you can also walk the walls independently: There’s no charge for admission.
The Passeig de la Muralla is a must for history buffs, hikers, and photographers.
Allow 30–60 minutes to walk the Passeig de la Muralla, including climbing up the towers and taking pictures: it’s about 1,100 yards (1 kilometer) long.
The walls are not wheelchair friendly. Several sections have steep stairs.
The Passeig de la Muralla is in the heart of Girona. People typically walk the city walls from the Jardins dels Alemanys to the Jardins de la Muralla, but you can also reach them from the Torre Gironella tower. The Jardins de la Muralla are about a 10-minute walk from Girona train station; the Jardins dels Alemanys are further away.
The Passeig de la Muralla is open year-round, with no admission charge. Sunset, or the “golden hour” just before sunset, is a very popular time to visit for photography; for a quieter time, go early in the day.
There’s more to Girona’s medieval old town than the city walls. Girona Cathedral’s long, steep stairs are easily recognizable from Game of Thrones, but the vast Gothic interior is spectacular. Girona Jewish Quarter is one of Europe’s best-preserved Jewish districts, with a medieval synagogue that now hosts the Museum of Jewish History. While built by Christians, the beautiful 12th-century Arab Baths pay tribute to earlier Islamic and Roman baths: They, too, are a Game of Thrones filming location.
