While you can hike Triund independently (as many people do), it’s much safer and more comfortable to go with a guide. Guided day tours often come with lunch, while overnight expeditions include everything you need for camping, including tents and sleeping bags.
Triund is a moderate trek, and travelers with a medium level of fitness will usually be able to make it up comfortably.
Make sure to wear appropriate footwear and sun protection before setting out.
There are small stalls at the top and along the way selling hot chai, snacks, and instant noodles.
While water is available for purchase from local vendors, it’s a good idea to bring plenty with you, just in case.
Triund is located in the hills above McLeod Ganj, a suburb of Dharamshala known as the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in Exile. To reach Triund, you’ll need to first go to the village of Dharamkot, just outside of McLeod Ganj, where the trailhead is located. Most people make it to the top of the trail in under 5 hours.
You can trek up to Triund throughout the year, as long as conditions are safe to do so, but winters can be too cold and snowy for overnight visits. For the most pleasant weather, visit between March and mid-June, when temperatures are at their highest, or in September or October, before things get too cold. The late-June through August monsoon season is best avoided.
